Celebrity Designer Khala Jones Commemorates JUNETEENTH 2020 with ‘Day of Service’ For the Minnesota Community

In partnership with Making Minnesota Right! – an organization that elevates the Black community through community service and by providing tangible resources, celebrity designer and owner of Grayscale, Khala Jones planned a day of service in the heart of the city (Glennwood & Penn Ave.) for Juneteenth 2020. Inspired by the death of George Floyd, Khala who is also a native of Minneapolis by way of Houston, Grayscale developed a custom t-shirt commemorating Juneteenth 2020 and the many strides the Black Lives Matter movement has made since his death. The custom t-shirt will be distributed throughout the community along with grooming kits (inclusive of sanitizer, water, and face masks).

“I really wanted to do something for my people. I’ve been protesting throughout all of LA, but I really wanted to come to Minnesota and help the community here. My family is here, I have old friends here. I knew I needed to come back,” says Jones who is known for her work with Cardi B., Ariana Grande, Nicki Minaj, and Ty Dolla Sign, to name a few. “The front of the t-shirt is a quote that really resonates with me. I truly believe that we are responsible for our own freedom. And the revolution definition is symbolic of the time that we are in. Our parents and grandparents were fighting for our rights in the ‘60s and here we are 60 years later still needing to fight. The back of the t-shirt is a list of all the strides we have made as a whole since the death of George Floyd. I am super proud of that. We all should be.”

Juneteenth 2020 comes only a few short weeks after the death of George Floyd over Memorial Day Weekend. Across the country, there are celebrations set up in major cities to recognize the emancipation of enslaved people. The first celebration was in 1865 in Texas. In 2020, Governor Cuomo has already declared Juneteenth a state of holiday in New York in light of all the protests of police brutality in this country. In Minnesota, Grayscale’s Day of Service in partnership with Making Minnesota Right! will be a community affair and celebration of Black culture. There will be food distributed to those in need and vendor tables set up for people to support Black businesses.
